The European Union (EU) condemned on Friday the deadly bomb attack in Batna, eastern Algeria, which killed at least 19 people and wounded some 100 others.
"The EU presidency strongly condemns any acts of violence and reiterates its support to the Algerian authorities' endeavors to achieve full national reconciliation and in the fight against terrorism," said a statement issued by Portugal, which holds the six-month rotating EU presidency.
The EU presidency said that the hideous attack against innocent civilians "represents an unacceptable attempt to undermine the peace and stability in Algeria."
Earlier Friday, EU High Representative for the Common Foreign and Security Policy, Javier Solana, also issued a statement condemning the bomb attack.
He expressed the EU's solidarity with the Algerian people in their effort to fight terrorism.
On Thursday, a self-made bomb exploded in Batna, 450 km east of the Algerian capital of Algiers, when local residents were awaiting a scheduled visit of President Abdelaziz Bouteflika who was on a tour of development projects in the region.
