A overcrowded truck fell into a gorge in Indian northwestern state of Rajasthan on Friday evening, killing 85 pilgrims, and injuring dozens of people, New Delhi Television reported on Saturday.
The mishap took place when the truck was travelling in a mountain road. However, the driver lost control over the wheels while making a sharp bend. Then the vehicle crashed into a protective wall on the road and hurtled into the deep gorge, according to the local police.
The injured people had been sent to different hospitals nearby, and medical team had also sent to the accident-stricken area to attend the wounded.
Local authorities send out cranes to retrieve the bodies and rescue the injured with the help of searchlights.
Identification of some of the dead had become very difficult because their bodies were dismembered and only limbs could be recovered.
The Rajasthan government spokesman said an ex-gratia of Rs 50, 000 (about 1235 U.S. dollars) will be paid each to the next of kin of the dead.
The pilgrims were on their way to the holy town of Ramdevara in western Rajasthan, police said.
