The European Union (EU) condemned "in the strongest terms" the car bomb attack in eastern Algeria Saturday, the second terror attack in the country in the last three days, and reiterated its support to the Algerian government in its effort to achieve national reconciliation.

The latest attack took place in the Mediterranean port town of Dellys, 100 km east of the capital of Algiers, killing at least 17 people and wounded 30 others. On Thursday, a suicide bombing attack in Batna, also in eastern Algeria, killed about 19 people and wounded 107 others.

In a statement, the EU's Portuguese presidency stressed the need for those responsible for the Dellys attack to be brought to justice.

"The EU presidency ... reaffirms that terrorism in all its forms and manifestations constitutes one of the most serious threats to international peace and security, and that any acts of terrorism are unjustifiable, regardless of their motivation, wherever, whenever and by whomsoever committed," said the statement.

The EU presidency also reiterated its support to the Algerian authorities' efforts to overcoming the great suffering of past decades and expressed its readiness to support Algeria in achieving full national reconciliation.

Although security has greatly improved in Algeria in recent years, sporadic attacks continue to be reported in isolated parts of the northwestern African country.
