UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon strongly condemned Saturday's terrorist attack in Algeria and appealed for peace and national reconciliation in the North African country.
In a statement released Saturday by his spokesperson, Ban said he is "deeply shocked and saddened by the escalation of terrorist violence in Algeria."
A suicide bombing rocked Saturday the Mediterranean port town of Dellys, 100 km east of the capital of Algiers, leaving at least 30 people dead and 47 others injured. The attack was the second to hit the country in three days.
Another suicide bombing attack struck the eastern Algerian city of Batna Thursday, killing 19 people and wounding 107 others.
The secretary-general, who is paying a visit to Libya, expressed his solidarity and sympathy with the people of Algeria and particularly the families of the victims.
"He firmly believed that violence will not deter the people of Algeria form the path of peace and national reconciliation," the statement said.
The UN Security Council also issued a statement Saturday denouncing the terrorist attack in Dellys.
