Palestinian governmental and private schools closed their doors on Sunday, going on a general strike against Hamas violent crackdown on supporters of the Palestinian Liberation Organization (PLO) in the Hamas-run Gaza Strip.
Some students, who barely started the new school year eight days ago, went to their schools but found no teachers there and so returned homeward.
Education sector in all parts of Gaza Strip towns and refugee camps expressed the most visible scene of the strike which comes two days after Hamas Executive Forces beat and arrested several PLO supporters.
Shops were also shut down except few stores whose owners have showed solidarity with Hamas, the Islamic movement which took control of the Gaza Strip in June after routing forces of President Mahmoud Abbas' Fatah movement, the biggest PLO faction.
Mohammed Abu Shgair, deputy education minister in the sacked Hamas administration, called on the teachers to "neutralize the educational institutions from the political differences."
He assured the teachers that the Hamas government will pay salaries for those who neglected the strike if their wages were cut by the government in the West Bank city Ramallah that Abbas formed after the Gaza takeover by Hamas.
