Observers from the Organization of American States (OAS) and the European Union (EU) on Sunday expressed satisfaction over the general elections in Guatemala.
Diego Garcia Sayan, the head of an OAS observer mission, said he was pleased by the smooth holding of the elections.
A European Union mission said in a report that all had gone normally and voter turnout was high.
A total of 202 observers were placed at the most important voting centers.
Garcia said 88 percent of the polling centers opened as planned and almost all of them saw voters queuing to fill in their voting cards.
However, the EU mission said 22 percent of the centers lacked security, even though 4,000 volunteers from local non-governmental organization Mirador Electoral offered guarding services.
International observers will leave on Monday and many are expected to return for the second round of presidential elections slated for Nov. 4.
