U.S. and Iraqi forces, backed by helicopters, fought suspected al-Qaida militants during a raid outside the city of Samarra north of Baghdad on Monday, killing 12 militants, the U.S. military said.
During the raid, the troops "receive heavy fire from multiple insurgents positioned in buildings on the objective, which resulted in three U.S. Army Soldiers receiving non-life threatening wounds," the military said in a statement.
U.S. and Iraqi forces returned fire while AH-64 helicopters provided direct air support, killing a total of 12 insurgents, the statement said.
The troops also detained three suspects and a fourth individual was positively identified as a hostage being held for ransom by the insurgents, it said.
Samarra, some 120 km north of Baghdad, is part of Salahudin province, a Sunni insurgents' stronghold, which has long been the hot bed of insurgency against the U.S. and Iraqi government forces since the breakout of Iraq war in 2003.
