Singapore and Indonesia on Monday signed an agreement to create more exchanges and collaborations in information and communication.

The new Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) replaced the one on Broadcasting and Communication signed in 1989. The old MOU covered areas such as radio, television and films, government information service, and press and publications.

The scope will be expanded under the new MOU to include cooperation in the fields of information and communication technology (ICT) and postal service.

This will enable Singapore agencies, such as the Media Development Authority and Infocomm Development Authority to build closer relations with their Indonesian counterparts.

The MOU will also facilitate and promote media collaborations such as co-production, marketing and distribution of audio visual and digital media content. In broadcasting, the respective broadcasters could explore co-production, exchanges and sale of media content.

Furthermore, the two countries will work together on developing e-Government, e-Commerce, e-Business and ICT infrastructures.

Indonesia's Communication and Information Technology Minister Mohammad Nuh said, "we have two schemes on how to develop the e- Government in Indonesia. The first we have an infrastructure system, the second is content. So maybe from Singapore we could join together to share how to implement and strengthen the infrastructure, and secondly, how to improve the content itself."

For his part, Singapore's Information, Communications and the Arts Minister Lee Boon Yang said, "the MOU provides a framework. It signals strong political commitment on the part of the Indonesian government and the Singapore government that we want to cooperate."

The two countries will set up a joint committee, headed by senior government officials, to implement the objectives set out in the pact.
