Security has been bolstered in Italy ahead of the sixth anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks in the United States, according to Italian News Agency ANSA.
Italian Interior Ministry's department for antiterrorism strategy analysis said no specific threats had been received but security agencies had been told to increase surveillance around potential terrorist targets.
The "sensitive" sites included certain embassies, consulates, airline offices, train stations and airports. It was also suggested that surveillance should be boosted around mosques and prayer centers.
"The date (September 11) could be used to heighten the media impact of possible terrorist action by Islamic fundamentalists," anti-terrorism officials said.
A survey carried out by chambers of commerce in five Italian cities found that fears of terror attacks showed no signs of waning six years after 9/11 and in some cases had increased.
Fears were strongest in Milan, where 65 percent of people admitted being worried compared to 50 percent a year ago. Tension was also higher in Rome, where 60.1 percent of people said they felt more at risk than 12 months ago.
Several initiatives have been organized in Italy to mark the anniversary of the attack on the Twin Towers in New York.
In Assisi, birthplace of St Francis, the bell in the city's most famous bell-tower will toll at the time of the attack. Italian composer Ennio Morricone will give a "peace concert" in Venice.
