The United States congratulates the Moroccan government for its successful parliamentary elections on Sept. 7, the State Department said in a statement on Monday.

"Reports indicate the elections met international standards. We see the elections as another step forward for Morocco and we support the Moroccan people as they build a more democratic, representative government," the statement said.

Moroccan votes went to the poll stations on Sept. 7 to elect 325 representatives of the lower house of the parliament.

Morocco has been a key U.S. ally in the African continent.
