The United Nations Human Rights Council opened its 6th regular session in Geneva on Monday, aiming to finalize its institutional building work.
During the three-week session, the council will try to conclude its institutional building package, including the adoption of the guidelines to be used for the new Universal Periodic Review (UPR) system, Doru Romulus Costea, the council's president, said in opening remarks to the session.
The first countries to be scrutinized under the UPR system will also be selected during the session, he added.
The council, made up of 47 member states, will also hear reports from some of the special rapporteurs and discuss the situation in the Palestinian territories.
Delegates will also discuss the future of the special rapporteurs, who cover 28 different themes from racism and the right to food to arbitrary detention.
The new Human Rights Council formally replaced its widely- discredited and highly politicized predecessor, the Human Rights commission, in June last year.
