Lebanese Prime Minister Fouad Seniora Monday called for international aid for rebuilding a Palestinian refugee camp battered by a three-month battle between Lebanese army and Islamist militants.
Seniora told a conference for donor countries to aid Lebanon that the Nahr al-Bared camp has been deemed "an area of disaster."
"Failure to rebuild the Nahr al-Bared camp will result in enormous consequences," he said, noting that the Lebanese government was doggedly pursuing efforts to rehabilitate it.
Several countries represented at Monday's conference gave positive response, local LBC TV reported.
The United States announced a 10-million-U.S. dollar project to help the refugees, while Germany pledged 4 million euros (about 5. 5 million dollars) for the camp reconstruction, according to the report.
Italy and Norway promised to contribute 2 million euros (2.7 million dollars) and 1.7 million dollars in emergency aid
respectively, the report said.
The Lebanese army claimed victory after over three months fighting with the militants of Fatah al-Islam, which is listed by the Lebanese government as a terrorist network aimed at destabilizing Lebanon, in the northern Nahr al-Bared camp.
The camp, some 12 km north of Tripoli, housed 40,000 refugees before the fighting began. The majority are now staying at other camps.
