The Time Magazine would take a legal action against the decision of the Indonesian Supreme Court that has punished the magazine to pay 1 trillion rupiah (about 100 million U.S. dollars) and beg an apology at the domestic and foreign media for its defamation on former president Soeharto regarding to his wealth in overseas, a lawyer said Tuesday.

Indonesian Supreme Court decided on Aug. 28 that the magazine had conducted a violation against the law by featuring an edition about how former Indonesian strongman Soeharto collecting his wealth valued at 9 billion U.S. dollars and parked them in overseas. The court said that the edition is a defamation on Soeharto.

Todung Mulya Lubis, a lawyer of the magazine, said that he could not accept the decision and would take a step to oppose it.

"(We will) take any legal action to oppose the decision that is against with the freedom of press, transparency and accountability, "he told a press conference at his office here.

The decision of the court was published to media on Monday.

When asked what kind of legal action to be taken, the lawyer said: "I still do not know, I must read (the decision in detain) first."

On its Asia edition on May 24, the magazine featured about how the former president Soeharto build his family wealth known as Soeharto Inc. It told about the transfer of the wealth from a bank in Switzerland to a bank in Austria.

Soeharto had ruled Indonesia for 32 years and was toppled by a mass riot in 1998 followed the Asian financial crisis.
