India's supreme court Tuesday allowed dismantling of a Norwegian ship at a scrap yard in the Gujarat state after receiving a report from a special committee that examined whether it contained hazardous waste.

The Blue Lady, the ship to be dismantled, was anchored along the coast of Alang in Gujarat.

Supreme court judges Arijit Pasayat and S. H. Kapadia granted permission for dismantling the ship on the basis of the report submitted by its committee of technical experts, the Press Trust of India (PTI) reported.

Environmental groups, alleging that the Blue Lady contained toxic asbestos, have been opposing its dismantling over concerns of health of the workers at the Gujarat scrap yard who will break it up.

Greenpeace estimates 90 percent of obsolete ships are broken up in India, Bangladesh, Pakistan, China and Turkey.
