There is no connection between the phone call to a Romanian number made by one of the terrorists involved in the Sept. 11 attacks and the subsequent events, the Romanian Intelligence Service (SRI) said Tuesday.

"To us, things are crystal clear. There is no operative connection requiring SRI to take action in one way or another," said Sorin Sava, a spokesman for the service.

On Tuesday, the French daily Liberation published a classified U.S. report on the activities of the 19 authors of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks in the 18 months preceding the attacks.

The report provides details on all the moves of the hijackers before Sept. 11: false identities used, called phone numbers, trips, bank operations, addresses and meetings with accomplices and friends.

According to Liberation, the report said terrorist leader Mohammed Atta had called a Romanian number before the attacks.

Also on Tuesday, Romanian Foreign Minister Adrian Cioroianu said his ministry was verifying and was waiting for an evaluation by the secret services of the data published by the French daily, which quoted a strictly secret report of the FBI.

"Of course, our concern is to verify things at that moment... We have to verify, to see what contact it is about, if the problem is related to an accomplice or to support of terror actions, to see for what purpose that number in Romania was called, who answered, possibly," Cioroianu said.
