As thousands of Americans gathered in New York Tuesday to mark the sixth anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, the families of Canadian victims of the event gathered in Toronto to memorize their loved ones.
The families of the 24 Canadian victims were joined by those of another terrorist attack in which 392 people were killed by a bomb aboard an Air India flight that took off from Canada in 1985.
Public Safety Minister Stockwell Day were present at the service and read a tribute.
The families have called for an official memorial ceremony in Canada to mark the tragedy. "It's like it happened yesterday. It certainly comes flooding back to me," Maureen Basnicki, whose husband Ken died in the collapse of the World Trade Center's north tower, told reporters.
Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper, who is visiting Australia, also commemorated the Sept. 11 attacks.
"Sept. 11, 2001, was truly a day that shook the world." Six years on, the horrific images from that morning still evoke anger, sorrow and, as intended, terror. The buildings may have been American, but the targets were every one of us," he told the Australian Parliament in Canberra Tuesday.
Nearly 3,000 people died when hijacked planes crashed into the World Trade Center in New York City, the Pentagon in Washington, D. C., and a field in Pennsylvania on Sept. 11, 2001.
