Spain's ambassador to Nicaragua, Jaime Lacadena, Tuesday delivered the first batch of aid to the victims of Hurricane Felix, which hit Nicaragua's North Atlantic Autonomous region last week.

"I wish to express the solidarity of the Spanish people, which can been seen in the this shipment of medical and hygiene equipment: staple items, tents, sleeping bags and material used for sheltering people," Lacadena said. He also expressed sympathy for the Nicaraguan people who have suffered in the disaster.

The supplies, which are part of a 17-ton aid donation, were carried by a Hercules C-130 transport aircraft that is being used as an air bridge between Managua and the hurricane-hit region.

The ambassador said that in addition to the 17 tons, which are worth some 750,000 U.S. dollars, Spain is also contributing 150,000 euros (184,500 dollars) worth of fuel for aircraft carrying aid to the region.

Nicaraguan Foreign Minister Samuel Santos thanked Spain for the aid, saying that the government will continue to monitor the region in order to evaluate exactly what international aid is needed.

Felix was a category-five storm on the Saffir-Simpson scale. Its winds reached more than 260 km per hour when it hit Nicaragua, killing 67 and leaving 150,000 homeless, according to official figures.
