Eight people, including seven security members, were killed in two attacks in and near the city of Mosul in Iraq's northern province of Nineveh, a provincial police source said on Wednesday.
"Unknown gunmen attacked a police checkpoint late on Tuesday in the Ein al-Beidha village in the al-Qaiyara town, 25 km south of Mosul, killing six policemen," the source told Xinhua on condition of anonymity.
Separately, gunmen stormed the house of an Iraqi Army officer in the al-Zinjili neighborhood in western Mosul city early on Wednesday morning, killing the officer and his father, the source said.
Insurgents frequently attack Iraqi security forces, accusing them of collaboration with the U.S. occupation.
Mosul, Iraq's third largest city some 400 km north of Baghdad, has long been the hotbed of insurgency and sectarian violence since the U.S.-led invasion in 2003.
