Sami Abu Zuhri, spokesman for the Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas), Thursday hailed a recent Russian call for the Palestinian rivals to resume a stalled dialogue to end the current internal crisis.
Deputy Russian Foreign Minister Alexander Sultanov called on the Palestinians to resume the dialogue between Hamas and the Palestinian National Authority (PNA) during his recent visit in Cairo, according to Abu Zuhri.
"The recent Russian statements reflect the delicate Russian understanding to the backgrounds and the realities of the incidents and the situations (in the Palestinian territories)," said Abu Zuhri.
He underlined that "western calls on reconsidering Hamas movement's position ... are mounting."
Sultanov arrived in Cairo on Tuesday afternoon on a two-day visit during which he met with Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmed Abul-Gheit and Arab League Secretary General Amr Moussa.
Besides Egypt, he will also visit Syria and Lebanon.
Russia was the only foreign country and member of the international quartet to hold contacts with Hamas leaders after the Islamic movement won the legislative elections in January 2006.
Embargo on Hamas, which was imposed by the Quartet committees -- the UN, the EU, the U.S. and Russia, the donor countries and Israel after it came into power last March, mounted after it took control of Gaza by force in mid June.
President Mahmoud Abbas refused to resume dialogue with Hamas movement, demanding it should regret what it did in Gaza, apologize to the Palestinian people for its military coup and return back all security apparatuses to him.
"The Russian position is an indirect condemnation to the position of leadership of the PNA which rejects the resumption of the national dialogue," said Abu Zuhri.
