The Bush administration has begun mobilizing support for a third U.N. resolution that would impose tougher sanctions against Iran, the Washington Post reported Thursday.
The United States will host top officials from Russia, China, France, Britain and Germany on Sept. 21 for talks on punitive measures in a new U.N. resolution following Teheran's failure to suspend uranium enrichment, the report said.
However, the United States has met resistance from Russia, China and Germany to sweeping new measures against Iran, the report said, citing diplomats familiar with the debate.
Pushed by the United States, two U.N. Security Council resolutions have been passed to punish Iran for its defiance on its nuclear issue.
Washington has accused Iran of trying to develop nuclear weapons under the cover of a civilian nuclear program. Iran has denied U.S. charges and insisted that its nuclear program is for peaceful purposes only.
