Two Thai political groups led by former deputy prime ministers Thursday agreed to merge and found a new party to run in the upcoming general election.
The Ruam Jai Thai Group (United Thai Hearts Group), led by former Deputy Prime Minister Somkid Jatusripithak, and the Chat Pattana Groups (Nation Development Group), led by Suwat Liptapanlop, also a former deputy prime minister, announced the merger decision after a high level meeting on Thursday.
Both Somkid and Suwat were close aides of the ousted Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra when he was in office and both of them were core members of the former ruling Thai Rak Thai Party which was founded by Thaksin.
However, a military coup last September ousted the Thaksin government and a ruling made by the Constitution Court in May disbanded the Thai Rak Thai Party. Moreover, all the 111 executives of the party were banned from politics for five years.
During Thursday's announcement, Somkid said he was glad that he could coordinate the merger of the two groups.
Two groups has yet to discuss the name of the party which will contest the general election on Dec. 23.
