Visiting Serbian Foreign Minister Vuk Jeremic said on Thursday in Beijing that his visit to China was a historic one and the visit was successful so far.

"This is a historic visit, because this is the first time in history that the Foreign Minister of Serbia is visiting China...I hope this will help open a new chapter in the relationship between our two nations and two peoples, which has been a history of friendship, understanding and mutual support," said Jeremic at a press conference.

He said he had a very successful day Thursday, having the chance to meet with Chinese Vice President Zeng Qinghong and Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi.

Jeremic said the central part of his discussions with the Chinese officials was bilateral relations between Serbia and China on various aspects.

He said the Kosovo issue was an important topic, and they spent a lot of time talking about the issue.

"I think I can say that we share your government's principles and stands that issues in the international arena have to be resolved through patient dialogues. I am very pleased that we've established the same point of view in this respect," said Jeremic.

On the Taiwan issue, he said he reiterated the strong support of Serbia to the one-China policy and the opposition to the possibility of referendum planned by Taiwan authorities attempting at the membership in the United Nations.

Jeremic and his Chinese counterpart signed a protocol on the cooperation between the two foreign ministries, according to Jeremic, which includes the exchange of diplomats.

Jeremic said he also discussed with the Chinese officials on how to improve the economic relationship between two countries.

He said in November there will be a a meeting of the joint committee on economics, which will be presided over by the two ministries of commerce.

The meeting is going to hammer out the details of the economic cooperation between the two countries, which will include the possibility of signing a tourism destination agreement and the possibility of reopening a direct air link between Belgrade and Beijing.

During the meetings with Chinese officials, Jeremic also reaffirmed the commitment of the Serbian Government to be present at the Shanghai Expo in 2010 and they also talked about Serbia's participation in the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games.

"It was really an amicable visit, it was a visit in which we reaffirm our strong friendship, strong mutual understanding and mutual respect between our two countries. I was very pleased of the results so far," said Jeremic.

He confirmed that the President of Serbia Boris Tadic will visit China in 2008 but said the specific date was yet to be set.

Jeremic will go to Shanghai to continue his three-day China tour.
