Hungary's governing socialist party (MSZP) is not against the United States' plans to deploy its anti-missile defense shield in Central Europe and it will not join an initiative to reject the system, a party official said on Thursday.
Prior to the Prague summit of social democratic leaders, MSZP's foreign policy expert Alexandra Dobolyi said the social democratic parties scheduled to attend the meeting share many views but there are issues in which the positions of various countries differ, such as the one concerning the US missile shield, MTI News Agency reported.
"We consider dialogue within NATO important because it is the best way for handling concerns and resolving problems," Dobolyi said.
Hungarian Prime Minister Ferenc Gyurcsany will not attend the meeting hosted by Czech opposition CSSD party leader Jiri Paroubek due to French President Nicolas Sarkozy's visit to the country on Friday.
The MSZP will be represented by Deputy Chair and Defense Minister Imre Szekeres.
