Portuguese Prime Minister Jose Socrates is to visit Poland Friday to discuss the future of the European Treaty and proposals for a European day against the death penalty.
Socrates, whose country holds the current rotating presidency of the European Union (EU), will meet with President Lech Kaczynski and Prime Minister Jaroslav Kaczynski.
They will chew over the proposed European Treaty whose final approval is expected at a meeting of EU leaders on Oct. 18-19.
Socrates will also try to convince Polish leaders of the importance of launching a European day against the death penalty.
Last week, Poland opposed the idea, arguing that the EU must open a wider debate about the right to life.
Portugal was the first European country to abolish the death penalty and Socrates plans to sign a joint declaration establishing Oct. 10 as the 27-member bloc's annual day against capital punishment.
