The missile defense system must be fully incorporated in NATO and it must protect not only the United States but also the whole of Europe, U.S. Democrat Congresswoman Ellen Tauscher told a press conference in Prague on Friday.
Tauscher, the head of the three-member delegation of the Congress that arrived in the Czech republic, held talks with Czech politicians on the U.S. plan to station a radar base in the Czech Republic and interceptor missiles in Poland.
She said that the Democrats and the Republicans clearly agreed that anti-missile systems were necessary.
The anti-missile system to be stationed in the Czech Republic and Poland is to be connected with another system defending against other type of missiles, she explained.
Czech Deputy Foreign Minister Tomas Pojar said he welcomed that the Congress preferred the missile defense shield being connected with NATO.
According to CTK information, U.S. Secretary of Defense Robert Gates is to discuss the U.S. base with Czech politicians in late October.
The United States unveiled its plan in January to place a radar system in Czech and 10 long-range interceptor missiles in Poland capable of shooting down missiles.
A recent opinion poll showed more than two-thirds of Czech citizens oppose the establishment of the base.
