A Hamas leader has accused Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas of refusing to accept dialogue to solve the political split between his Fatah movement and Hamas, the Gaza-based pro-Hamas news website Palmedia reported on Saturday.
Ezzat al-Reshq, an exiled Hamas politburo member, was quoted as saying that "Abbas is still refusing to accept the dialogue," blaming Abbas on the political split between Gaza and the Fatah- dominated West Bank.
He, meanwhile, stressed that Hamas' calls for dialogue with Abbas' Fatah movement were not supplications and don't reflect weakness.
Hamas seized control of the Gaza Strip from pro-Abbas forces after days of bloody fighting in June. Since then, Abbas sacked a Hamas-led coalition government and left Hamas confined to the Gaza Strip.
Al-Reshq justified that the Gaza takeover by Hamas, which won January 2006 elections, "was to protect the Palestinian legitimacy and to maintain the Palestinian people's democratic choice."
Any "political agreements neglecting Hamas position will never succeed," referring to an upcoming US-sponsored peace conference to help reviving Israeli-Palestinian peace process, said the Hamas leader.
