European Union (EU) High Representative for the Common Foreign and Security Policy Javier Solona on Monday welcomed Sunday's reconciliation agreement on Somalia signed in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.
Solana said that the agreement would provide for a new phase in the efforts to achieve reconciliation among all the Somali people in a time frame, which he said should be as short as possible.
He called on the international community to continue to follow Somalia closely at a time when Africa is advancing along the road to peace.
The EU foreign policy chief also paid tribute to Saudi King Abdullah and Prince Saud Al-Faisal, whose patient and determined efforts led to the conclusion of the substantive agreement on Somalia.
Leaders of Somalia's transitional government Sunday signed a reconciliation agreement in Jeddah, following up on an inconclusive conference in the Somali capital of Mogadishu in August.
