The United States will investigate the shootout in Baghdad by U.S. security firm Blackwater which killed eight Iraqis, the State Department said Monday.
"It seems like a terrible incident," State Department spokesman Sean McCormack said at a briefing.
McCormack said U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice will call Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki later Monday to discuss the incident.
"She is going to express regrets for the loss of lives and also make it clear that we are investigating this incident and that we are at each step along the way going to share what we are finding, " McCormack said.
According to media reports, the Iraqi government ordered Blackwater on Monday to stop work in Iraq and leave the country after the fatal shootout that killed eight Iraqi civilians and wounded 13 others.
