A Taliban commander responsible for the kidnapping of 23 South Koreans was killed in central Afghanistan, the police said Tuesday.

International troops carried out an air raid against a Taliban hideout in Giro district of Ghazni province on Monday night, killing Mullah Abdullah Jan and other 11 Taliban militants, provincial police chief Ali Shah Ahmadzai told Xinhua.

Jan and another Taliban commander Mullah Mateen were the two key players in the abduction of the South Koreans.

On Sept. 3, Mateen and another 15 Taliban militants were killed by Afghan and foreign troops in Qarabagh district of Ghanzi.

The South Koreans were kidnapped by Taliban rebels in Qarabagh district on July 19. Two of the hostages were executed, while the others were released.

Due to rising Taliban violence, over 4,500 people, most of whom were Taliban militants, have been killed in Afghanistan since the beginning of this year.
