Romania needs immigration flows from outside the European Union (EU) to ensure a selective access into the country, Romanian President Traian Basescu said on Tuesday.
"We must seek a net positive balance of migration. We need immigration flows from outside the EU to ensure a selective access into the country, especially for persons who can perform highly creative activities specific to knowledge-based economy," said Basescu in the country's central city of Sibiu while attending an international conference "Romania's population, where to?"
According to unofficial data, more than 2 million Romanians are working abroad, that is about 10 percent of the country's population.
"We are trying to bring home the 2 million Romanians working abroad," said Labor Minister Paul Pacuraru at the conference.
Pacuraru said for the time being the Romanian labor market is not affected by the demographic decrease, but noted that there is a gap between the "academic environment and the administration."
The two-day conference beginning Tuesday was attended by representatives of the Senate, the government, the employers' unions and trade unions, the UN Fund for Population, alongside European parliamentarians as well as local and foreign experts.
