The new president of the UN General Assembly Srgjan Kerim said Tuesday that climate change, financing for development, management reform, the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) for tackling poverty and counter- terrorism should all receive priority attention by the world body.
Kerim told a press conference hours ahead of the opening of the 62nd session of the General Assembly that he has been holding consultations with UN member states and various political groupings on these key issues in a bid to spark progress since his election as president in May.
By focusing the session on core shared concerns, he outlined his priorities for the coming year, saying that he hoped to advance the international community's long-standing goal of revitalizing the General Assembly.
Grappling with topics that are "the essence of the agenda of the United Nations is the best way for the General Assembly to revitalize itself and to place itself where it belongs -- in a central position at the United Nations," the president said.
At the same time, he noted the need for continued attention to items that have long been on the Assembly's agenda, including Security Council reform, system-wide coherence and intercultural dialogue.
Kerim, a seasoned diplomat who has served as minister for foreign economic relations, minister for foreign affairs as well as permanent representative of the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia to the United Nations in New York, was elected president of the coming session of the General Assembly.
