Sri Lankan police said Wednesday that they had found a dozen bombs hidden in a building in the capital Colombo and arrested two people in connection with the incident.
"We did a search operation in Kotahena Jampettah Street Tuesday night and found the bombs hidden in a building," a police spokesman said.
The police said that Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) rebels may have transported the bombs to the capital.
The police in the capital carry out sudden security operations in the city to ban suspected accomplices of LTTE rebels arriving from north and east.
Strict security checks on vehicles are also done at random to check possible transportation of high powered bombs and explosives into the city.
Security authorities say they take no chances with rebels since they were completely evicted from Eastern Province in mid-July.
The LTTE claimed that they have tactically withdrawn from the east and warned of revenge against economic and military targets of the government.
The LTTE has waged war with the majority Sinhala community dominated governments since the mid-1980s to set up a separate homeland for the minority Tamil community.
Nearly 70,000 people have been killed in the conflict since then.
