The European Commission (EC) announced Wednesday a grant of 36.5 million Euros (around 50 million U.S. dollars) to the Afghan government to support its health sector.
"The European Commission is committed to a long term partnership and support," EC Ambassador to Afghanistan Hansjorg Kretschmer told a joint press conference with Afghan Health Minister Mohammad Amin Fatimi.
This newly announced assistance would be disbursed within the next two years, beginning from the current year, to construct health centers and rebuild health services in this country, he added.
He also said the EC would contribute 160 million U.S. dollars until 2010 to further improve the health sector in this post- Taliban country.
Access to health services, according to Fatimi, has now reached to 83 percent of the Afghan population while the objective is to increase the coverage rate up to 90 percent by 2010.
The EC, which is the executive body of the European Union, has pledged 1 billion Euros to war-torn Afghanistan, and of these, more than 80 percent has already been disbursed.
