Afghan and the U.S.-led coalition forces killed more than one dozen Taliban insurgents in Uruzgan province of southern Afghanistan on Wednesday morning, a coalition statement said.

The joint forces on a combat patrol were ambushed by some militants in northwestern Uruzgan, the statement said, adding that the forces fought back and called in close air support.

"More than a dozen enemy fighters were killed in the engagement,"the statement said.

Due to rising Taliban violence, over 4,500 people, most of whom were Taliban militants, have been killed in Afghanistan since the beginning of this year.
