Pakistani President General Pervez Musharraf on Wednesday told the Commonwealth Secretary General Don McKinnon that his government will hold a free, fair and transparent election in the country.

Talking to McKinnon at his Camp Office in Rawalpindi, Musharraf said his focus was on ensuring political stability in the country in the run-up to the general election, according to a report of Associated Press of Pakistan (APP).

McKinnon arrived in Islamabad on Wednesday for a three-day visit to "seek an assessment of political development in Pakistan, " according to a statement of the Commonwealth, an association of 53 independent states, mostly the former British colonies.

Musharraf praised the role of McKinnon in making the Commonwealth a vibrant and dynamic body and underlined the need for forging strong ties with the Commonwealth.

McKinnon said he was greatly reassured about the statement submitted on behalf of Musharraf in the Supreme Court about his decision to relinquish the post of Army Chief if he is re-elected as President for the next term, APP reported.

He praised Musharraf for the robust economic growth in Pakistan as a result of widespread economic reforms introduced in the diverse fields. He hoped that such reforms would continue in the future.

McKinnon will enquire about plans for the election to the National and Provincial Assemblies to be held in the next few months, the Commonwealth statement said.

McKinnon is scheduled to meet with opposition political leaders in Islamabad on Thursday.
