King Mohammed VI of Morocco named Abbas el Fassi, leader of the conservative Istiqlal (Independence) party, as the next prime minister of the kingdom, the official MAP news agency reported Wednesday.

King Mohammed VI has received el Fassi at the royal place in Rabat and named him prime minister, the report said.

The appointment came after el Fassi's Istiqlal party won the Sept. 7 legislative elections by garnering 52 of the 325 seats in the lower house of parliament.

As the biggest parliamentary party, Istiqlal's leader el Fassi thus was ordained by the king to be the new prime minister.

El Fassi, a veteran politician and government minister, will then form a new government to replace the current one led by Driss Jetto, the report said.
