The European Commission, the executive arm of the European Union (EU), condemned "in strongest terms" the bomb attack in the Lebanese capital of Beirut on Wednesday, which killed a parliamentarian and four others.
"The Commission is deeply shocked about the latest attack which occurred today in Beirut and caused the death of member of parliament Mr. Antoine Ghanem ...together with other innocent people and injured so many," said European Commissioner for External Relations and European Neighborhood Policy Benita Ferrero- Waldner.
Such "contemptible" act should by no means obstruct the process of electing the new president and the process of reform that lies ahead of Lebanon, she added.
A huge explosion caused by a car bomb occurred on Wednesday afternoon in the Sin el-Fil district, a Christian suburb in eastern Beirut, killing Ghanem and four other people, and injuring some 30 people.
Ghanem is a member of the Lebanese Christian Phalange party, to which the assassinated Industry Minister Pierre Gemayel also belonged.
The Lebanese parliament is due to meet on Sept. 25 to choose a successor to outgoing President Emile Lahoud, whose mandate expires on Nov. 23.
The car bombing has caused widespread concerns among the Lebanese, fearing further disarrays and violence.
