The United States and Iraq agreed to set up a joint commission to examine security of U.S. officials in Iraq after the shooting incident involving security firm Blackwater, State Department deputy spokesman Tom Casey said Wednesday.
"The commission's goal is to make joint policy recommendations, including specific suggestions for improving U.S. and Iraqi procedures regarding government-affiliated personal security details," Casey said at a briefing.
The investigation on the Blackwater shooting incident will be the main task of the commission, Casey said, adding that the United States reiterated its commitment to have a comprehensive and transparent investigation of the Blackwater incident.
The Iraqi government ordered Blackwater on Monday to stop work in Iraq and leave the country after the fatal shootout that killed eight Iraqi civilians and wounded 13 others.
Blackwater has been a security firm that protects U.S. diplomats.
