Taxi drivers in Nepali capital Kathmandu Thursday morning disrupted traffic, protesting for fuel supply.
The taxi drivers protested the decision of the Ministry of Supplies to limit distribution of petrol.
The supply ministry on Wednesday decided to decrease the distribution of petrol from pumps owned by institutional petrol stations like Sajha (public cooperative organization), Nepali Army and Nepal Police and these stations will sell petrol only to people with coupons.
Nepal Oil Corporation (NOC) said the distribution for the general public would be done through private petrol stations to manage the large queues at the government outlets.
Since most private petrol pumps are dry, taxi drivers were angered by the decision.
Demanding petrol supplies from the pumps owned by government agencies, taxi drivers blocked roads and disrupted traffic at Bhadrakali, Sundhara, Balkhu, Koteshwor, Baneshwor, Swayambu, Balaju and Naxal of the capital, and also parked their taxis in front of Singha Durbar, where most of Nepali ministries including Prime Minister's Office and House of Representatives, state-run Radio Nepal and Nepal Television are located.
The state-owned Nepal Oil Corporation (NOC) has said it is not in a position to ensure smooth supply since it had no money to purchase adequate volume of fuel from Indian Oil Corporation (IOC), according to local leading media group's website nepalnews.com.
Due to non-payment of outstanding dues, the IOC has been cutting down its supplies to NOC in recent months.
