Activists of southern Nepali armed group JTMM-G kidnapped five persons, local leading media group's website THT Online reported on Thursday.

The armed cadres of Jay Krishna Goit-led faction of Janatantrik Terai Mukti Morcha (Terai Democratic Liberation Front) (JTMM-G) on Wednesday night kidnapped the five people including a Village Development Committee (VDC) secretary in Rautahat district, some 110 km south of capital Kathmandu.

According to the Rautahat district police office, a group of armed JTMM-G cadres led by Nitesh kidnapped secretary of Bishrampur VDC Ramlochan Shah, former vice-chairman of Ramauli Bairiya VDC and the Communist Party of Nepal (Unified Marxist- Leninist) cadre Nagendra Prasad Patel, Junior Technical Assistant at Garuda sugar mill Shankar Shah, and civilians Shambu Prasad Patel and Ganesh Shah of Ramauli Bairiya VDC.

Locals reported that VDC secretary Shah and CPN-UML activist Patel were released on Thursday morning, police added.

Fractions of the JTMM, including JTMM led by Goit and another major group led by Jwala Singh, have been carrying out a series of attacks and abductions on local party leaders, government officials and civilians in southern Terai districts.

JTMM factions have been demanding a separate state in south Nepal's Terai region.
