An ongoing conference of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) on Thursday passed a resolution, calling on all parties involved to strive for a nuclear-free Middle East.

The resolution, called "Application of IAEA Safeguards in the Middle East," praised the efforts by the nuclear watchdog in safeguarding security and atomic supervision.

The resolution urged all states in the Middle East to accept the application of full-scope Agency safeguards as an important confidence-building measure in enhancing peace and security in the context of establishing a nuclear-weapon-free zone.

The general conference also passed a resolution on the Korean Peninsula Nuclear Issue, which supported the six-party talks, and welcomed the progress toward a nuclear-free Korean Peninsula.

The 51st annual session of the IAEA General Conference involving 144 nations is taking place this week at the Austria Center in Vienna.
