Vietnam is expected to grant special amnesty to 9,680 convicts, including 10 foreigners, in 2007, local newspaper Labor reported Friday.

To date, local relevant agencies have considered over 1,000 cases proposed for the amnesty, the paper quoted the Vietnamese Ministry of Public Security as reporting.

Vietnam often offers amnesty to prisoners on the occasion of the Lunar New Year (in January or February), the National Reunification Day (April 30), May Day and National Day (Sept. 2) every year.

The country commuted sentences and released ahead of terms a total of 6,150 inmates on the occasions of the National Reunification Day, May Day, and the National Day in 2006.
