Romania and NATO representatives Friday signed a memorandum of understanding on hosting the NATO summit in Bucharest in April next year.
The document was signed by Romanian Vice Foreign Minister Victor Micula and North-Atlantic Council Secretary Berndt A. Goetze at the headquarters of the Romanian Foreign Ministry.
Agreements were reached after months of negotiations between Romanian diplomats and NATO experts.
The document is primarily a technical, not a legal one, which mainly aims to establish the responsibilities for the event in the host country, State Secretary Victor Micula told a press conference Friday.
He added that the document will be a basis for the allocation of funds for the event, with Romania responsible for the costs of staple products, security equipment, media centers and other relevant expenses.
Goetze said NATO is grateful to Romania for hosting the summit, which he said is an extraordinary event in terms of its scale and organization. He added that he was impressed by the Parliament Palace in Bucharest, the summit's venue, in terms of its capability of hosting the event.
The NATO Bucharest Summit will be the largest one in the history of NATO, as all the 23 member states of the NATO Partnership for Peace will attend, besides 26 member states of the alliance, said Micula.
Approximately 3,000 high-ranking officials are expected to participate in the summit, with around 3,500 journalists covering the event, whose security will be guarded by some 9,000 Romanian troops, officers of the Special Guard and Protection Service, police officers and gendarmes.
The exact expenses of the event in Romania will be made public in October, which are estimated at 30-35 million euros.
