Belgium sent 40 more soldiers Friday to Afghanistan to reinforce its peacekeeping forces in the Central Asian country and prepare for the takeover of the command of the Kabul airport in October.
In the six months to come, the 40 soldiers will be responsible for the airport security, air command, radar operations, aircraft maintenance, and other tasks such as mine clearance and logistical support, to make sure the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) operations proceed smoothly.
They will also provide assistance to the Afghan authorities in airport management and operation.
Belgium's cabinet agreed to send more troops to Afghanistan in March to take over the command of the Kabul airport.
Belgium has sent 300 soldiers to Afghanistan. Most of them are in Kabul, with only 20 or so helping German soldiers in northern Afghanistan for reconstruction work.
