Former Peruvian President Alberto Fujimori (1990-2000) said on Friday that Chile's decision to extradite him to Peru is an opportunity to reacquaint himself with the Peruvian people.
"The Chilean justice's decision to approve my extradition to Peru is an opportunity for my return because part of my objective was to reacquaint myself with the Peruvian people," Fujimori told a Peruvian radio network.
Fujimori said he voluntarily chose to arrive in Chile in November of 2005 after abandoning Japan.
Fujimori had been living in self-imposed exile in Japan, where he was protected because of his double nationality, since 2000.
The verdict of Chile's Supreme Court was made public on Friday morning. The court was in favor of extraditing Fujimori for seven of the 13 charges he faces in Peru. Two of the charges are for human-rights violations and the other five for corruption.
Fujimori said he will only face some of the charges in Peru since the rest of the cases were no longer in effect.
Fujimori said he expected to be extradited for four cases and not for seven the Chilean justice system finally approved.
"I will surely and certainly" win the judicial process in Peru, Fujimori said.
Fujimori acknowledged that he made big mistakes during his administration. But he also said that the fight against terrorism was ongoing and that this proved he acted correctly.
