UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon announced on Friday the creation of a trust fund to support next month's Darfur peace talks in Libya between the Sudanese government and rebel groups.
The UN chief, who co-chaired a high-level meeting on Darfur with African Union Commission President Alpha Oumar Konare at the UN Headquarters on Friday afternoon, said the trust fund would help facilitate the diplomatic efforts to resolve the conflict.
Ban also said he would soon appoint a special negotiator to spearhead efforts to bring the concerned parties to the talks in Libya, which will be conducted under the auspices of the UN and AU envoys for Darfur, Jan Eliasson and Salim Ahmed Salim.
Those talks must be the "final phase for a final settlement" of the Darfur conflict, Ban said.
Representatives from 26 countries, including Sudan, the permanent members of the Security Council, key nations from the region and members of the AU Peace and Security Council, as well as officials from the European Union and the League of Arab States, attended the one-day meeting.
