U.S. and Iraqi troops killed 10 insurgents and detained 16 others during raids on their safe houses in Diyala province, a provincial police source said on Saturday.

The raids took place in and around the town of Maqdadiyah, some 100 km northeast of Baghdad, the source said.

The troops also blew up two booby-trapped houses, defused 11 roadside bombs and found three weapons caches in the town, according to the source.

Diyala province, which stretches from Baghdad to the Iranian border to the east, has long been the hotbed of insurgency and sectarian violence since the U.S.-led invasion in 2003.
