UN General Assembly President Srgjan Kerim proposed on Monday the creation of a comprehensive roadmap to guide international efforts to combat climate change.
"I would like to propose creating a comprehensive roadmap to guide the way forward for the UN system and its member states: to outline the instruments we have and structures necessary to address climate change," Kerim told the opening session of the UN High-level Event on Climate Change at the UN Headquarters.
"This process should also draw in the expertise of civil society, business and the academy - to create a global movement, a true global consensus for action," he said.
Kerim announced his intention to convene a General Assembly thematic debate at the beginning of next year to begin to forge this consensus.
"We all agree that climate change is unquestionably the biggest challenge facing humanity in the 21st century," he said. "There is no more time to waste. The momentum we have now must not be lost."
The high-level meeting, convened by UN Secretary-General Ban Ki- moon, seeks to determine future action on mitigation, adaptation, the global carbon market and financing responses to climate change for the period after the expiration of the Kyoto Protocol - the current global framework for reducing greenhouse gas emissions - in 2012.
