Finnish President Tarja Halonen called on Wednesday for the formulation of a new global climate change regime that will take effect after 2012.
"Climate change affects the future of the whole of mankind. Finland highlights the necessity to reach, as soon as possible, a globally inclusive agreement on the post-2012 climate regime," Halonen said during the second day of the general debate of the UN General Assembly.
"The UN has a central role to play in this process," she stressed, adding that every nation has the right to develop and to aim for growth and prosperity.
"Industrialized countries must show solidarity towards developing countries and take all possible steps to promote access to environmentally sound technologies for all," Halonen added.
The first commitment period of the Kyoto Protocol, which sets emission reduction targets for industrialized countries, expires after 2012.
