Three people were killed and two injured on Wednesday in a raid to arrest two drug lords in the Complexo do Alemao, a complex of favelas in north Rio de Janeiro.
A total of 40 cops and an armored vehicle participated in the operation aimed at arresting two alleged leaders of a drug gang, known as Mica and Da Lua, in a favela called the Vila Cruzeiro.
The police and the drug dealers exchanged gunfire for five hours before making their way into the favela where Da Lua's house is located, but the police did not find him and Mica.
The three killed in the operation were all involved in drug trafficking, said Lieutenant-Colonel Marcus Jardim.
One of them, who was shot in the head, remained unidentified. Elias da Cruz, 19, has been identified as Mica's nephew and a member of his gang, which his family denied. Roberto dos Santos, another man killed in the shooting, had two criminal records against him.
Fabiola Goncalves Vieira, 24, was shot in a foot as she was waiting at a nearby bus stop. She is a nurse. Another injured was Fernando Ribeiro, whom the police said was also a drug dealer.
